Thanks to our friends Balam Coffee Project out of Montreal we were introduced to Rosalba's coffee. Rosalba started Mayan Harvest Coffee, a womens growing community.
from Balam Coffee's Instagram:
"The rise of asylum seekers and refugees have led the men out of Chiapas, leaving them with a rising population of women. The coffees we have to offer have been picked and processed by women only, most often widows and single mothers.
These women are lacking some of the most basic needs due to the fact that basic amenities are few and far between. The nearest city is about 2.5 hours away from the Sierra Madre region which is where the community lives and where the coffee is grown. Transportation to and from is very rare, near to non-existent. Some of the more specific issues right now that we take to heart is women's hygiene and access to sanitary napkins are majorly lacking. Part of the funds made with the sale of this coffee will go towards purchasing 110 menstrual cups to distribute to the 110 women working on the farm."
